History and Characteristics of Shigaraki Ware
Shigaraki Ware is a traditional Japanese craft originating in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. Its history is said to date back approximately 700 years to the mid-Kamakura period, making it one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns. Some theories suggest that its origins can be traced even further back to roof tiles used in palaces during the Nara period. As one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, Shigaraki Ware developed during the Edo period through the production of tea caddies, household goods, and other items. Today, its traditional techniques and distinctive character continue to be carefully preserved, making it one of Japan’s most renowned ceramic traditions.
